The 3 Root Causes Of Chronic Migraines Nobody Explains To You

August 24, 20265 min read

If you've read my last post, you already know I talk a lot about the inflammation overload loop, chronic, systemic inflammation running through your nervous system in a way that keeps lowering your threshold until almost anything can trigger an attack. If this is the first time you're here, that's fine too, you don't need anything else to follow this.

Today I want to answer the question you're actually asking. Fine, it's inflammation. So what do you do about it.

There are three layers I look at with every single client. Here they are.

Layer One: Inducers

Your inducers are six interconnected systems working together, your nutrition, your toxin load, your daily rhythms, your movement, your electrolytes, your nervous system.

Most approaches only ever go after one or two of these at a time, which is a big part of why they stall out after a few weeks.

Your sodium-potassium pump, your cellular hydration system, leaves most women chronically depleted at the cellular level no matter how much water they're drinking. Your glymphatic system, your brain's overnight clearance mechanism, can leave you accumulating inflammatory waste every night no matter how many hours you sleep, which is why eight hours can still leave you feeling like you got hit by a truck.

Cortisol dysregulation shows up here too, your stress hormone running on a broken rhythm, spiking when it shouldn't and flatlining when you need it. That alone can keep your inflammatory threshold low all day, independent of anything you eat.

Here's where I want to save you some money and some time. More supplements are usually not the answer. I see women adding pill after pill to their morning routine, hoping one more bottle is the missing piece, when what's actually missing is addressing all six of these areas together, in the right combination.

Layer Two: Drivers

Your drivers are for you if you've been told, or decided yourself, that your migraines are permanent because of something specific. Hormones. Gut dysfunction. Autoimmunity. An old injury or concussion. Chronic stress that's been sitting in your body for years, keeping your sympathetic nervous system stuck in overdrive.

Those drivers are real. But they are not the end of your story. When your inducers are addressed properly, it gives your body what it needs to actually calm those drivers down instead of letting them run the show.

Picture a house with a cracked foundation and a leaking roof at the same time. You can patch the roof all day, spend thousands doing it, and water is still getting in from underneath. Strengthen the foundation first, and the roof patch actually holds.

Layer Three: Genetics

For some of you, there's a real genetic piece. Maybe migraines run in your family, the way they did for my client Jaci, whose mother had migraines too, and who was told her migraines were simply familial, no explanation beyond that.

But genes are not destiny, they're switches. The MTHFR gene changes how your body processes B vitamins, which can fuel inflammation. There are genes tied to electrolyte regulation, histamine intolerance, and genes directly linked to migraine. Inflammation is what flips those switches on. Calm the inflammation through layers one and two, and the switch can flip back off. Your family history explains a tendency. It doesn't seal your fate.

Why Order Matters

These three layers don't work if you tackle them in a random order, or one at a time, forever. Inducers come first, because they give your body the stability it needs to actually respond to work on the drivers. Your drivers have to be calmed before your genetic switches will reliably stay off. Skip the sequence, and you're back to patching the roof while the foundation keeps cracking.

You may have already touched pieces of this. It probably helped some. But if it wasn't done together, in the right order, and personalized to your body, the whole picture never came together the way it needed to.

There's a fourth piece too, the part where your nervous system has to unlearn a pattern it's practiced for years. That's a conversation for another time.

For now, ask yourself which of these three layers you've been pouring almost all your effort into. I'd guess it's been mostly just one, and that's exactly why it hasn't held. If you want to see all three walked through in more depth, with the actual sequence I use, I have a free training that goes further than this post can.

A message from Debbie: "I was once right where you are now. 100% believing there was NO WAY to end migraines and my only option was to learn how to live with them or find that magic pill that maybe would work for a while. If anyone told me back then that I could end my pain once and for all, I would have called BS and popped another pill! Skeptical times 10 was my middle name for sure because when you try it all and everyone tells you they can help you and they don’t. You stop believing… you lose HOPE! I now realize I was approaching my migraines all backward. I was trying to cover up symptoms versus trying to end my pain."
